Bread oven (box A 250): by order of 10 September 1990
Origin and history
The bread oven of Coubladour is a small rural building located in the commune of Loudes, in the department of Haute-Loire, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument, emblematic of local heritage, illustrates the importance of collective ovens in the daily life of villages. Its stone-cut construction, with a volcanic lava vault and basalt slabs inside, reflects the traditional techniques of rural architecture in the region.
This oven, inscribed in historical monuments by decree of 10 September 1990, is distinguished by its technical characteristics and its social role. The entrance, framed with stone, leads to an interior space where basalt preparation tables are arranged along the walls. The sole, paved with lava, and the dome of the vault key, with a diameter of 1.80 meters, testify to the adaptation of local materials, such as volcanic stone, for practical and sustainable uses.
From an ethnological point of view, this oven represents a vestige of community practices related to bread making, a central activity in rural societies in the past. These buildings, often shared among several families, played a key role in the collective organisation of the village. Their preservation allows us today to understand the lifestyles and craftsmanship that have marked local history.
