Chapel of the cemetery (Box B 71): classification by order of 8 January 1964
Origin and history
The chapel of Peyrus Cemetery is a 12th century religious building located in the commune of Peyrus in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument, classified by ministerial decree in 1964, now belongs to the commune and illustrates the medieval sacred architecture of the Drôme. Its location, reported at 435 Route de la Chapelle Saint-Pierre, reflects a historical location anchored in the Provencal rural landscape.
In the 12th century, cemetery chapels played a central role in the community and spiritual life of villages. They served as a place of prayer, burial and assembly for religious ceremonies, thus marking the importance of the Christian faith in the medieval social organization. The region, then under feudal and ecclesiastical influence, saw these buildings as symbols of collective piety and memory of the deceased.
