Sixteenth century cross (Box A 723): inscription by decree of 30 May 1927
Origin and history
The cemetery cross of Quily is a 16th century monolithic cross, located on the square of the church of Saint-Nicodème, in the commune of Val-d'oust (Morbihan, Brittany). It rests on a rectangular base decorated with sculpted heads at angles and semi-relief characters, including a cross Christ on the main face. An inscription engraved on the base, dated 1805, mentions: "LA HAINE L'ASBA L'AMOUR LA RELEVE 1805", suggesting a restoration or replacement on that date.
The cross has been listed as a Historic Monument since May 30, 1927, recognizing its heritage value. Its decor includes masks of animals and men at the corners of the base, as well as an unidentified figure under a tree, holding a stick or tool. These elements reflect the artistic and symbolic traditions of the Breton Renaissance crosses, often linked to commemorative or religious functions.
Owned by the commune of Val-d'Oust, the cross is located at 31 Rue de l'If, in Quily. Its exact address is referenced in the Merimée base under the A 723 cadastre. Although its state of conservation is not detailed, its location is considered "passible" (note 5/10), and it remains accessible to the public in the parish area.
