Origin and history

The Brech Cemetery Cross is an emblematic monument located in the village of Brech, in the department of Morbihan, Brittany. Dating from the seventeenth century, it is distinguished by its semi-cylindrical massif and its shields without coat of arms, typical of Christian architecture of the period. This monument, inscribed in historical monuments since March 20, 1934, illustrates the importance of religious symbols in Breton public spaces.

The cross features sculpted representations of Christ on the cross, accompanied by the Virgin Mary and St John on one side, and one Pietà on the other. These sculptures, as well as the saints on the sides, reflect 17th century religious art and the central role of the cross in community life. The straight pediment, decorated with openwork, adds a remarkable aesthetic and architectural dimension.
