Origin and history

The Fountain of the Cross of the Mission, located in Billom, Puy-de-Dôme, was built between 1857 and 1858 as part of an urban development campaign under the Second Empire. Designed by Clermont architect Henri Taché and created by sculptor Pierre Béraud, it is part of a municipal project to modernize the city, including the creation of three fountains and the construction of a new city hall. Its eclectic style, blending decorative elements inspired by Roman art and the Renaissance, reflects the artistic trends of the period, rare in the region.

The fountain, originally planned with an octagonal central column, was finally equipped with a fluted column on an octagonal base. Dated from 1856 in the archives, its actual realization was spread between March 1857, the date of the treaty between the commune and the sculptor, and September 1858, when the works were received. This monument, now protected and registered since 1995, bears witness to local architectural ambition and the influence of 19th century artistic currents.

The work is embedded in a broader context of urban transformation, where fountains played both a practical (water supply) and a symbolic (beauty of public space). In Billom, as in other French cities, these developments reflected the hygienist and aesthetic priorities of the Second Empire, while affirming the prestige of the municipalities. The Fountain of the Cross of the Mission, by its stylistic originality, stands out as a notable example of this heritage.
