Origin and history

The Fountain of Sainte-Mesme, located in the municipality of the same name in Île-de-France, is an emblematic building built in the 16th century. This monument, classified by ministerial decree in 1952, illustrates the hydraulic architecture of the Renaissance, typical of the Franciscan villages of the time. Its initial role, probably linked to water supply, reflects the daily needs of the inhabitants before its subsequent adaptation.

In the 20th century, the fountain underwent two major transformations: it was laid out in 1948 and then restored in 1962. The original carved group, a central decorative element, was moved to the local church in 1964 and replaced by a mould to preserve the work while maintaining the site's functionality. These changes reflect changes in public use and efforts to conserve rural heritage.

Owned by the municipality of Sainte-Mesme (code Insee 78569), the fountain is located at 23 Rue Charles Legaigneur, according to data from the Merimée database. Its classification as a Historic Monument underscores its heritage value, although its GPS location is considered to be of poor accuracy (note 5/10). Available sources, such as Monumentum, confirm its protected status, without specifying its current accessibility to the public.
