Origin and history

The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Gaillac originated in 1891 in the donation of paintings by Firmin Salabert, a pupil of Ingres, to his hometown. Four years later, in 1895, this painter bequeaths more than 300 additional works, thus enriching the municipal collections. These gifts lay the foundations of a future museum, but it was not until 1903 that the city acquired the Château de Foucaud, a building built under Louis XIV, to install the collections there. The museum finally opened in 1934 in this historic setting.

In 1994, the museum was completely redesigned to offer two floors of permanent exhibitions and spaces dedicated to temporary exhibitions. Labeled "Musée de France", he showcases works by local artists such as Henri Loubat, Charles Escot, or the Tournon (father and son), as well as sculptures by Jules Pendariès, who enjoys a dedicated room. Since 2000, the museum has also acquired oils and drawings from Marie Bermond, expanding its collections.

Today, the museum has 500 paintings, 700 drawings, 200 prints and 63 sculptures, mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the major pieces are the Alpine landscapes and romantic pastels of Firmin Salabert, as well as documents evoking local figures such as doctors Baron Portal and J.-J. Rigal. The Château de Foucaud and its park, built under Louis XIV, add an architectural heritage dimension to this cultural place.

The museum retains a strong regional identity, with works reflecting the artistic history of Gaillac and Tarn. The temporary exhibitions, organized in the lower rooms, complement this offer by highlighting various themes or artists, while perpetuating the memory of Salabert's founding gifts and subsequent acquisitions.
