Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman Archaeology Museum of Var is located in Fréjus, in the Var department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Although its name refers to the Adrets-de-l'Estérel, the available sources clearly indicate its address in Fréjus, Place Calvini. This museum, labeled "Museum of France", preserves archaeological remains from the local territory, especially those of the ancient city of Forum Julii, founded in the Roman era. His collections illustrate everyday life, artisanal practices and funeral rituals of this period.
The museum is organized around three main themes: potter's workshops and their ceramic production, the Roman habitat reconstructed through the house of Place Formigé, and the necropolises discovered during excavations between 1983 and 1987. Among the masterpieces are the bicephalic Hermes, symbol of Fréjus, and a polychrome mosaic called "the panther". A model of the ancient city and a 3D film complete the visit, offering an immersion in Forum Julii.
The museum highlights a local heritage marked by the Gallo-Roman heritage, with stone objects and architectural elements that demonstrate the strategic and economic importance of Fréjus in ancient times. Its exact address, 13 Place du Docteur Calvini, and its connection to the municipality of Fréjus (code Insee 83001) confirm its anchoring in this historic territory. Sources also mention a website and a telephone number for visitors.
