Origin and history

The Gallo-Roman Museum of Biesheim is located near a major archaeological site, located along the Rhine between Augs and Strasbourg. The site has been the subject of spot searches, surveys and projections since 1960, allowing the creation of significant archaeological collections. These discoveries motivated the municipality to request, in 1988, the creation of a museum to preserve and enhance these remains.

Inaugurated in 1990, the museum is housed in a building designed in 1991 by the architectural firm Mongiello & Plisson, based in Colmar. It highlights everyday life in Alsace in the Gallo-Roman era, covering themes such as funeral rites, army, religion and domestic life, between the first and fifth centuries after Jesus Christ. The museum is labeled "Musée de France" and is distinguished by its accessibility to people with reduced mobility and to audiences with hearing, mental or mental disabilities.

The museum's collections come from excavations carried out on a strategic site, near the Rhine, a vital route of communication and exchange during antiquity. The museum project was driven by the desire to keep these testimonies of the past locally, while making them accessible to the general public. The official address of the museum, according to the Museofile base, is the Town Hall Square in Biesheim, although GPS coordinates suggest a location close to the Place de l'École.
