Origin and history
The Gallo-Roman site of the Nal is an archaeological complex located in the municipality of La Veraie-Croix, Morbihan (Britland). It is located at Le Nal, about 1.5 km south-east of Larré and 3.1 km north-east of the centre of La Veraie-Croix. The remains, spread over a square surface of 30 metres and a height of 1.2 metres, suggest occupation during the Gallo-Roman period. The terter, in good condition of conservation, was partially searched, revealing architectural elements such as a door, clay and mortar floors, as well as an altar and a stylized female statue.
The archaeological discoveries, although limited, evoke two main hypotheses for the use of the site: a Gallo-Roman villa, suggested by the presence of rooms and floors, or a temple, indicated by the altar and the statue. There was no complete search that allowed a final decision to be made, but the site's listing in 2002 (excluding modern buildings) underlines its heritage importance. The remains and their parcel (ZB 61) have been protected since the decree of 16 April 2002, thus preserving a rare testimony of Roman occupation in inland Brittany.
The majority of the earth remains intact, offering an unexplored archaeological potential. Past excavations, the exact date of which is not specified in the sources, concerned only part of the site, leaving room for different interpretations. The location in rural areas, far from the great ancient axes known, questions about the exact nature of this place: aristocratic residence, local sanctuary, or other unknown function. The absence of contemporary written documents limits certainties, but the artifacts discovered attest to an organized human occupation during late antiquity.
Administratively, the site depends on the municipality of La Veraie-Croix (code Insee 56261), in the district of Vannes. Its approximate address, 5014 Le Nal, allows to situate it in an environment today agricultural, contrasting with its ancient past. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory (note 7/10), although accurate GPS coordinates are not detailed in the sources consulted. The site does not appear to be systematically open to visit, but its status as a historic monument guarantees its conservation for future generations.
