Origin and history

The Gallo-Roman well of Courcelles-sur-Viosne is an ancient monument located in the municipality of the same name, in Île-de-France. Although its precise period of construction is not documented in available sources, its name suggests an origin related to the Gallo-Roman period, between the 1st century BC and the 5th century AD.

J.C. This type of structure was essential for the water supply of the rural or urban habitats of the time. In the francilian region, as in other Roman-dominated territories, wells played a central role in the organization of villages and villaes (agricultural estates).

They show advanced construction techniques at the time, often associated with drainage or storage systems. Their presence also reflects the importance of water in everyday life, whether domestic, agricultural or artisanal. Remnants such as Courcelles-sur-Viosne provide insight into lifestyles and local infrastructure during antiquity.
