Origin and history
The Alizon garage is an iconic building located in Dijon, Burgundy-Franche-Comté, built between 1905 and 1906. Originally designed as a garage for cycles and automobiles, it embodies the development of motorized mobility in the early 20th century. Its architecture, combining stone, brick, slag cement and ceramic, reflects a refined Art Nouveau aesthetic, marked by a large central oriel that dominates the facade. This building, described as an "ostentatious" while remaining elegant, illustrates the desire to combine technical functionality and bourgeois aesthetics, characteristic of establishments linked to the luxury industry of the time.
The architectural ensemble was preserved in its original provisions of 1906, including remarkable elements such as the exhibition shop with its cochère door, the check-pass, garage boxes, the preau-atelier, as well as the apartments of the manager-owner and the warden. These spaces, decorated in a bourgeois eclectic style, form a coherent whole that reflects the social and professional practices of the time. The Alizon garage was listed as historic monuments by order of 20 July 2012, thus recognizing its exceptional heritage value.
The architect Louis Perreau, the project's main contractor, has combined technical constraints and aesthetic research to create a unique building. The facade, with its varied materials and imposing oriel, makes it a rare example of industrial architecture incorporating artistic references. Today, the Alizon garage remains a valuable testimony to Dijon's history, reflecting both technological innovation and the social aspirations of the early twentieth century.
