Origin and history

The Clermont-Ferrand bus station, designed by architect Valentin Vigneron, is built between 1957 and 1961 in the Salins district, near the city centre. Its style is distinguished by a glass-paved facade decorated with "V" concrete, a central dome, and colourful ceramics. The initial project, won by Jacques Henri-Labourdette in 1949, was finally entrusted to Vigneron after the abandonment of the first winner. The estimated cost in 1957 is CHF 159 million.

In 1979, the House of Congress and Culture was erected nearby. The bus station ceased operations in 2005 and its boarding docks were destroyed. However, its hall and façade were listed at the Historic Monuments in 2006, protecting its remarkable architecture, including concrete decorations by Jean Mosnier and granite floors.

A first project to convert to a community library (2004-2009) fails due to archaeological discoveries, local opposition, and the economic crisis of 2008. Finally, the municipality chose to install the Comedy of Clermont-Ferrand. The works, led by Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura between 2017 and 2020, preserve the original façade and hall, while adding two theatres and spaces dedicated to artists.

The original building is characterized by a reinforced concrete frame, a discontinuous colonnade, and enamelled lava panels. The central hall, covered with a low dome, illustrates Vigneron's structural classicism. Today, the site combines 20th century architectural heritage and contemporary cultural dynamism.
