Origin and history
The Gaston Coute Museum has been housed since November 2005 in renovated premises within the 'La Monnaye' Cultural Space in Meung-sur-Loire. This site pays tribute to a 17th century old 'Maison de la Monnaie', where lizards and copper coins were struck. The museum's integration into this symbolic place links historical heritage and contemporary culture.
The museum's collections cover various fields: archaeology (prehistory, protohistory, Gallo-Roman, Paleo-Christian), archives (paper, sound, photographic), numismatics, and natural sciences (entomology, geology, paleontology). A section is specifically dedicated to the life and work of Gaston Coute, local poet, as well as to regional history and music, with scores and memories of composers.
Although located in Baccon in some sources, official data (Museofile, INSEE) place the museum in Meung-sur-Loire, in the Loiret department (Centre-Val de Loire region). The building, labeled 'Musée de France', highlights assets such as its numismatic collection and its multidisciplinary approach, mixing material and intangible heritage.
