Origin and history

The Gautret mansion is an emblematic building located in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, Sarthe department, Pays de la Loire region. This manor house, now classified as a historic monument, was originally the seat of a seigneury whose first mention dates back to 1275. Although its origins are ancient, its current structure dates mainly from a reconstruction carried out in the 15th century, reflecting the seigneurial residential architecture of that time.

The mansion, including its interiors and commons, was listed as historic monuments on 22 October 1996. This heritage protection underscores its historical and architectural importance, while preserving the characteristic elements of its medieval past. The site is today a testimony of the seigneurial dynamics and architectural transformations that marked the Sarthe between the Middle Ages and the modern era.

Like many manor houses in the region, the Gautret mansion illustrates the central role of these residences in the local social and economic organization. The lords exercised their authority there, while participating in the exchanges and community life of Sablé-sur-Sarthe, a city marked by its river history and built heritage. These buildings also served as places of power, where political issues, alliances and management of the surrounding lands intersected.
