Origin and history
This building from the 1st quarter of the 18th century, located in Saint-Malo, was part of the town's original enclosure. Its facade, typical of the architecture of the period, is distinguished by an elevated ground floor with a rectangular door framed with slits and surmounted by a curved pediment. The two floors, separated by a granite bandeau, present windows with assembled granite frames, reflecting the know-how of local artisans.
The building is marked by a notable historical event: the secret marriage of François-René de Chateaubriand with Céleste Buisson de la Vigne, celebrated there on 29 February 1792. This discreet union is part of the tormented context of the French Revolution, adding a romantic and literary dimension to this monument.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 17 February 1950, the building is protected for its facade and roof. Its address, 7 rue des Grands-Degrés (formerly 4 rue des Grands-Degrés), makes it a point of interest in the historic center of Saint-Malo, an emblematic port city of Brittany. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, reflecting the mapping challenges of older buildings.
