Origin and history

The building at 23 rue de l'Arcade in the 8th arrondissement of Paris was built in 1904 by architect Georges Debrie (1856-1909) on the site of an old mansion. Sponsored by Isaac says Gustave Gompel, head of Paris-France (manager of the department stores Aux Dames de France), he illustrates the Parisian architecture of the first twentieth century, with its stone bowlows and a neo-XVIIIe carved ornamentation. The building is distinguished by its stairwell adorned with exceptional stained glass windows, made by painter-glassman Louis Jacques Galland (1855-1922).

Galland's stained glass windows, executed using a patented painting technique in 1892 with enamel on cathedral glass, represent rock trellises populated by climbing plants (clematites, roses, virgin vines). This work, considered the most accomplished of the artist in this process, is among the only three known with those of Hotel Regina and the winter garden of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. The building housed until the 1950s the registered office of the real estate company Bernheim brothers and sons.

Partially classified as Historic Monuments in 2021, the building specifically protects its entrance hall, stairwell (including windows) and adjoining vestibule. Its exact address, 23 rue de l'Arcade, contrasts with an approximate GPS location indicating 20 rue Pasquier, reflecting a map accuracy deemed poor (note 5/10). The architect Debrie, also known for his shops Aux Dames de France in Hyères, Toulouse and Perpignan, leaves a characteristic imprint of the late Haussmannian style.
