Origin and history

The building located Place des Héros in Arras is a historical monument whose protection concerns the facade. Ranked by ministerial decree on January 17, 1920, it illustrates the attention paid to the architectural heritage after the First World War, during which time many buildings were damaged or destroyed in the area. Its central location, in a city marked by a rich medieval past and a major reconstruction in the twentieth century, makes it a silent witness to these transformations.

Arras, capital of Pas-de-Calais, has had a dense urban history, especially because of its strategic and commercial role since the Middle Ages. The buildings of the Grand Place and Petite-Place, like this one, often reflect an architecture typical of Flemish and Artesian cities, mixing bricks and stones. Although details of its construction or historical occupants are lacking, its early ranking (1920) suggests a heritage value recognized since the mid-war.

This type of building was involved in local social and economic life, probably hosting shops, housing or craft activities.
