Facades and roofs (cad. 500, 509): inscription by order of 30 April 1946

Origin and history

The Auvillar buildings, located around the central hall, illustrate a remarkable example of the civil architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Their arcade layout and triangular layout, organized around the Place de la Halle-aux-Grains, reflect the local urban traditions of that time. These buildings, with their facades and roofs protected since 1946, bear witness to the economic and social importance of market places in the southwestern bastides.

The hall and its surrounding buildings, inscribed in the Historic Monuments, embody the central role of public spaces in community life under the Old Regime. At that time, places such as Auvillar served as a place of exchange for cereals and other foodstuffs, while structuring the urban space. Their preservation today offers an overview of urban planning and commercial activities that animated small towns in the region.

The architectural complex, with its arcades and hall, is characteristic of the Occitan bastides, where the balance between commercial, administrative and residential functions was paramount. The protection of facades and roofs in 1946 underscores the heritage value of this site, both for its aesthetics and for its historical role in the urban fabric of Auvillar. The location, although documented (Horloge Street, Place de la Halle-aux-Grains), remains of average accuracy according to available sources.
