Origin and history
The building at 21 Gambetta Street in Pontarlier is a building dating back to the 4th quarter of the 16th century. Today, it retains significant remains of this period, including an entrance gate, a vaulted corridor in a cradle and the location of a screw staircase. These architectural elements testify to its late Renaissance style, typical of bourgeois or urban constructions of the period in Franche-Comté.
In the 18th century, the building was completely rebuilt, partially erasing its original characteristics. Only the portal, with its archvolt, was preserved and protected under the Historical Monuments by a registration order of 23 September 1971. This protection specifically concerns the door and its framing (cadastre F 546), highlighting its heritage value.
The location of the building, right in the centre of Pontarlier, reflects the historic importance of this city, a commercial and military crossroads between France and Switzerland. The 18th century transformations are part of a context of urban beautification, marked by the adoption of more modern architectural styles, while preserving traces of earlier eras.
