Origin and history

The so-called Providence building is located in the heart of the village of Saint-Briac-sur-Mer, in Ille-et-Vilaine (Bretagne), 2 rue du Commander-Pierre-Thoreux. Built in the first half of the 20th century, it is distinguished by its architecture combining stone and brick, typical of the seaside town planning of the time. Its central location, near the post, makes it a landmark in the local urban landscape.

The peculiarity of this building lies in its commercial front, entirely covered with a mosaic with stylized plant motifs on a yellow-orange background. Produced between 1925 and 1926 by Isidore Odorico fils, this work marks the beginning of a series of similar creations in Brittany and Anjou. The Odorico workshop, specialized in mosaic art, has thus left a lasting imprint on the regional architectural heritage.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 7 March 2014, the building is protected for its facades, front and roof. This official recognition underscores the artistic value of the mosaic, as well as the importance of preserving the testimonies of the decorative art of the 1920s. The building embodies both local history and the evolution of the craft techniques of the inter-war period.
