Marble pillar at the corner (Box E 11, 37): inscription by decree of 20 November 1972
Origin and history
The 14th century building in Elne is distinguished by a white marble pillar built into its structure. This medieval pillar has a polygonal barrel composed of three elements of uneven heights, based on a heel base and a polygonal base. Its capital, devoid of sculpted decoration, has symmetrical moldings and retains its astragal, basket and abacus, characteristic of the Gothic civil architecture of the period.
The recently added section of the building highlights this pillar at the corner of the building, located at 3 rue Sevastopol. Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 20 November 1972, only this pillar enjoys official protection, underlining its heritage interest in an otherwise modified building. GPS coordinates and approximate address (15 Sevastopol Street) suggest a central urban location, although map accuracy is considered poor (note 5/10).
No information is available on the original use of the building, its possible sponsors, or its role in local life in the 14th century. Sources are limited to the architectural description of the pillar and its ranking, without mentioning other historical elements or associated characters. The Merimée and Monumentum base do not provide details of past occupants or major alterations suffered by the building outside the recent creation of the cut panel.
