Origin and history
The buildings in Plappeville, in the Moselle department (Great East), are an example of 18th-century civil architecture. Their precise location at 81 and 83 rue du Général-de-Gaulle is attested by the Merimée and Monumentum bases. These buildings, whose facades and roofs are protected, illustrate the urban style of the modern era in Lorraine, an area marked by both French and Germanic influences.
The 18th century in Lorraine is a period of reconstruction and beautification of cities, after the conflicts of the previous centuries. Bourgeois buildings, such as those in Plappeville, often reflect the growing prosperity of local elites, linked to commerce, crafts and administration. Their preservation, with elements such as the garden and its stairs, bears witness to the importance attached to the harmony between habitat and green space in the urban planning of the Old Regime.
The official protection of these buildings, which took place by order of 22 October 1991, underlines their heritage value. It deals specifically with facades, roofs and the garden, characteristic elements of their architectural identity. Their location in the commune of Plappeville (code Insee 57545) inscribed them in a territory marked by the military and civil history of the Moselle, near Metz.
