Origin and history

The Portalet Fort is a Pyrenean military structure built between 1842 and 1870 under Louis-Philippe to control the road to the Somport Pass, replacing an old 16th century medieval toll station. Located 700-800 m above sea level on a cliff overlooking the Aspe gave, it combines barracks, bastions armed with cannons and galleries dug into the rock, designed to withstand a siege with 400 men. Its 150 m of elevation architecture makes it a remarkable example of 19th century mountain fortifications.

From 1871 to 1925, the fort was occupied by the 18th Pau Infantry Regiment, then transformed into a vacation colony until 1939. Under the Vichy regime (1941-1943), he became a political prison welcoming figures from the Third Republic such as Édouard Daladier, Paul Reynaud or Léon Blum, before sheltering a German garrison and then being taken over by the guerrillas in 1944. After the war, he briefly held Marshal Pétain (August-November 1945) before being demilitarized in 1962.

Ranked a historic monument in 2005 for its architectural and historical interest, the fort was bought in 1999 by the community of municipalities of the Aspe Valley. Restoration works (roofs, terraces, access) allow its opening to the public, with guided tours organized by the local tourist office. Since 2021, a Himalayan bridge links the Route de la Mâture to the fort, strengthening its tourist attraction.

The site also includes additional protected elements: the fort of Poutou (medieval post), a yaw road, a bridge over the gave of Aspe, and masonry shoulders. These developments illustrate the evolution of defensive strategies in the Pyrenees, between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The fort also bears witness to various uses, from political detention to reintegration projects (as in 2015 with prisoners trained in masonry).
