Origin and history
The Sault Municipal Museum was founded on 7 April 1859 by Henri Chrestian, local historian and mayor of the city. The latter, also a member of the Vaucluse Academy, was the curator at the end of the 19th century. The collections, mostly made up of donations, reflect a marked eclecticism, covering fields as varied as archaeology, medieval art or the natural sciences. The institution thus imposed itself as a place of preservation of the local heritage, mixing ancient objects, works of art and geological or paleontological specimens.
The museum's collections are distinguished by their thematic diversity. There are Egyptian antiques, including a mummy, stone objects, tools and statuettes, as well as medieval remains such as coins, weapons and pieces of armor. The natural history section highlights the mineralogy and zoology of Sault Township, while paleontology has tertiary fossils. A gallery of paintings, including works by the Bernardi de Valernes family, completes this collection, illustrating the artistic evolution of the region.
The museum benefits from the label Musée de France and is located at 5 Rue de l'Ancienne Place aux Herbes, in a building whose location, although documented, remains of an accuracy deemed fair (note of 5/10). Its thematic areas, ranging from fine arts to nature sciences, make it a reference point for understanding the cultural and natural heritage of interior Provence.
