Origin and history
The house Gerlier is a medieval house located in the village of Peruges, in the department of Ain, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Built in the 15th century, it embodies the civil architecture of this period, marked by integrated defensive structures, as evidenced by the ramparts and round roads associated with it. These elements reflect the strategic importance of fortified villages in the region at that time, where the houses were also used for collective protection.
Classified under the title of historical monuments by order of 24 November 1921, the house Gerlier is distinguished by its facade and the parts of ramparts that depend on it, identified under cadastre 1471. This ranking underscores its heritage value, both for its architecture and its role in local history. The monument is located precisely at 238 A rue des Rondes, a central location in the medieval village of Peruges, known for its preserved heritage.
At the time of its construction, the 15th century, Peruges was a dynamic village, probably oriented towards artisanal and commercial activities, typical of the fortified villages of the region. Houses such as those of the Gerliers served both as a place of life and as a component of the defensive system, illustrating the interdependence between habitat and protection in medieval societies. This type of monument also bears witness to the cultural and economic exchanges that led the Rhône-Alpes region.
