Origin and history

The Gorges du Fier is a spectacular geological formation located in Lovagny, Haute-Savoie, 11 km west of Annecy. Drained by the torrent of Fier over about 20,000 years, they result from the glacial erosion that gave rise to Lake Annecy. Their particularity lies in their narrowness and depth, described as "slit canyon", with walls up to 25 meters high. A 250-metre walkway, built in 1869 by architect Marius Vallin and ranked in 1943, allows visitors to walk through them overlooking the torrent.

The site is home to remarkable geological phenomena, such as "giant pots", "great fault" or "fairy rock". The rocky walls, eroded by the floods, bear marks of historical water levels, including a record flood of 24 metres in January 2018. Some rock formations evoke faces by pareidolia, adding a mystical dimension to the place. The gorges are also associated with a local legend involving the Count of Montrottier, his wife Diane, and a love-loving page, whose fall in the Proud would explain the moaning heard in the throat.

The legend tells that the page, betrayed by Diane and the Count of Pontverre, avenged itself by denouncing them, before being led to death by the fugitive rider. His body disappeared into the torrent, giving birth to the gorges, while his complaints would always haunt the places. This folk tale adds to the tourist attraction of the site, ranked among the greatest natural attractions in the French Alps. The bridge, suspended on a rockside, remains a testimony of 19th century engineering and a unique view of this landscape shaped by water and time.

The formation of the gorges is related to the glacial history of the region. After the melting of the glaciers, the Fier, fed by the waters of Lake Annecy, dug the rock by overtaxation, creating a narrow and spectacular passage. The site, accessible to the public, also illustrates natural hazards, with historical floods engraved in the stone. These brands recall the destructive power of the torrent, while highlighting the resilience of the alpine landscape.

Today, the Proud Gorges attract visitors for their geological beauty and legendary heritage. The bridge, still in place since 1869, offers an immersive experience above the torrent, while the rock formations and local stories enrich the visit. The site, protected and enhanced, embodies both a natural and cultural heritage of Savoy, between science and folklore.
