Origin and history
The tomb of the Gérard family is a funeral monument located in the cemetery of Justey, Haute-Saône. Built in the 19th century, this grave is distinguished by its architecture inspired by Egyptian models, with a square plan surmounted by a flared cornice. The trapezoidal facades, decorated with sculptures like a scarab symbolizing the renaissance, also incorporate Art Nouveau motifs, including friezes of lotus flowers engraved at their base. The metal door, decorated with a solar disc and floral motifs, reinforces this unique stylistic blend for the time.
Ranked among the historical monuments since 2008, this tomb reflects the eclectic tendencies of the 19th century bourgeois funeral art. Its inscription in the heritage inventory highlights its architectural and symbolic value, while anchoring its history in the local landscape of Justey. The size stone used and the precision of the ornaments bear witness to remarkable craftsmanship, characteristic of the funeral achievements of this period in Franche-Comté.
The mausoleum now belongs to the municipality of Justey, although its current access and vocation (visits, commemorative use) are not specified in the available sources. Its exact location, however, in square 2 of the cemetery (park AK 316) allows it to be accurately located within the communal space. The photographs and topographical records, such as those of Ginette Mathis under Creative Commons license, document his current state and approximate location, assessed as "passable" by heritage databases.
