Origin and history
The Grand Hotel, originally called Hotel Germania, was built from 1869 in the centre of Ajaccio. The building adopts an impressive architecture, organised around a large rectangle preceded by an open garden on the courtyard. Its main façade, inspired by neoclassical inspiration, is distinguished by a central body framed by two raised pavilions, while the lateral wings are rhythmic by pilasters with bosses. The first floor bays, decorated with curvilinear frontons, highlight the elegance of its composition.
This monument played a key role in the urban development of Ajaccio under the Second Empire and the Third Republic, symbolizing the modernization of the city and its openness to tourism. Originally conceived as a hotel establishment, it reflected the growth of hospitality infrastructure in Corsica in the 19th century. Today, it houses the Regional Assembly of Corsica, marking its institutional transformation.
The gardens and façade of the Grand Hotel have been protected under the Historic Monuments since a decree of 8 August 1990, amended in 1992. The property is shared between the Corsican Region and a private company. Its location on the Grandval course makes it a major architectural landmark of the Ajaccia heritage, although its exact location is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10).
