Origin and history

The Grand Hotel la Cloche, located 14 Darcy Square in Dijon, is a five-star establishment with facades and roofs classified as historical monuments. Founded in the 15th century under the name of "ostelerie de la Cloiche", it crossed the eras under various names (hotel de Condé, hotel de la Cloche) and welcomed personalities like Napoleon III in 1856. Its history reflects the political and social upheavals of France, from the Revolution to the Restoration.

In 1881 the hotelier Edmond Goisset entrusted the architect of Dijonnais Louis Belin with the construction of a new building in Darcy Square, inaugurated in 1884. This Haussmannian-style building, decorated with bells and a clock, became a symbol of Dijon luxury. In 1926, the Parisian architect Joseph Jardel enlarged the hotel by adding a wing along Devosge Street, in a style identical to the original. The establishment had a great time, welcoming kings, artists and heads of state.

The Second World War marked a turning point: occupied by the Germans from 1940 to 1944, the hotel declined in the 1970s due to the disaffection of the clientele and the outdated facilities. Threatened by destruction, he was saved by his inscription in historical monuments in 1975, thanks to the mobilization of local associations. After a major renovation in 1982, he reopened under the direction of the La Hénin group and was taken over by the Jacquier family in 1984.

Integrated into the Sofitel chain in 1994, then in MGallery in 2013, the Grand Hotel la Cloche underwent a complete renovation between 2014 and 2015, modernizing its 88 rooms and spaces while preserving its historic character. In 2024, he obtained Green Globe certification for his ecological commitment, combining luxury and sustainability. Its cut stone facades, ironwork balconies and campanile make it a Dijon architectural gem.

His illustrious guests include such personalities as Queen Marguerite of Italy (1906), Rodin (1908), Lattre de Tassigny (1944), and artists as Johnny Hallyday and Grace of Monaco. The hotel, with its gourmet restaurant, spa and lounges, remains a prestigious place, mixing historical heritage and modernity.

Architects Louis Belin (1881-1884), Joseph Jardel (1926) and Paul Chaudonneret (1982) marked his architectural evolution. Today, the Grand Hotel la Cloche embodies French hotel excellence, while testifying to five centuries of Dijon's history.
