18th century Grand Bridge on the Doubs: inscription by decree of 19 October 1948

Origin and history

The Grand Pont de Dole is a major work of art located in the city of Dole, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built in the 18th century, it spans the Doubs and represents a typical example of the bridges of this period, combining functionality and aesthetics. Its inscription as a Historical Monument by order of 19 October 1948 underlines its heritage and architectural importance.

The location of the bridge, at approximately 1 Avenue de Lahr, is considered satisfactory (note 6/10 depending on the Merimée base). Owned by the municipality of Dole, it is an integral part of the city's urban and historical landscape. Available data from Monumentum and the internal archives confirm its role in structuring the city and local exchanges.

In the eighteenth century, bridges were essential infrastructure for the economic and social development of cities. In Dole, as in other cities of Franche-Comté, these works facilitated trade, in particular the transport of goods via waterways such as the Doubs. Their construction also reflected the technical progress of the time, often under the impetus of local or royal authorities.

The Grand Pont de Dole is part of a regional context marked by a significant civil and military architecture, since Franche-Comté is a strategic region on the border between France and the territories of the Holy Empire. The monuments of this period, such as this bridge, illustrate the evolution of construction techniques and the importance attached to the sustainability of public infrastructure.
