Cemetery Cross (Great): Registration by Order of 16 October 1930

Origin and history

The large cross of the Molsheim Cemetery is a historical monument located in the Alsatian municipality of Molsheim, in the department of Bas-Rhin. Dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, this stone cross is representative of the funeral buildings of this period, often linked to religious devotion and the collective memory of local communities.

This cross was inscribed as historical monuments by order of October 16, 1930, thus recognizing its heritage value. According to available sources, it would initially come from Strasbourg, although it is now located in the Molsheim cemetery. Its architecture and location reflect the funeral and artistic practices of Alsace in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance.

The monument is now owned by the municipality of Molsheim. Although its state of conservation and accessibility are not detailed in the sources, its listing in the heritage reflects its historical and cultural importance to the region. The cemetery crosses of that time often served as a spiritual landmark and a symbol of protection for the deceased and the living.
