Dolmen dit La Grosse Pierre (cad. ZI 31): by order of 23 July 1979

Origin and history

La Grosse Pierre d'Échenoz-le-Sec is a dolmen located in the department of Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This megalithic monument, whose architecture remains partially unknown in the absence of excavations, consists of a support slab and an oval cover table measuring about 3 meters long by 2.50 meters wide. The stone has been completely squandered on its edge, suggesting an ancient human work.

Dolmen was first reported in 1974, before being classified as a Historical Monument by order of 23 July 1979. Although its exact function and precise archaeological context are not documented, it is part of all the megalithic collective burials of Franche-Comté, studied in scientific publications such as Gallia prehistory in 1976. The property of the monument today belongs to the municipality of Echenoz-le-Sec.

In the current state of knowledge, no archaeological excavations have made it possible to specify its internal architecture or its exact use. Dolmens of this type, common in the region, were generally associated with collective funeral practices during prehistory. Their presence attests to the ancient occupation of territories and social rituals of neolithic or protohistoric communities.
