Origin and history

The Grange aux dimes de Bourges, located in the city of the same name in the region Centre-Val de Loire, is a building built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. This building, classified as a Historical Monument since 1886, was intended to receive royalties in kind collected by the Bourges chapter. Its architecture reflects its practical use: the lower floor, vaulted in two naves and three spans, was dedicated to the storage of wines, while the attic, accessible by an external stone staircase, was probably used to store cereals or other agricultural products.

The barn structure reveals typical architectural features of the late 13th or early 14th century. The vaults are supported by cross ribs, resting on cylindrical pillars decorated with hooked capitals. The external foothills, as well as the small gelatin lancets illuminating the attic, confirm this dating. This type of building illustrates the medieval economic system, where royalties in kind (thousands) were levied by religious or seigneurial institutions to finance their activities.

Today, the Grange aux Dimes belongs to the commune of Bourges. Although its original use has disappeared, its ranking among the Historical Monuments and its location in the city centre (9 Molière Street) make it a valuable testimony of local medieval history. Available sources, such as the Merimée and Monumentum Base, highlight its heritage importance, while noting that its exact location remains approximate according to modern geographical accuracy criteria.
