Origin and history

Morina's barn, classified as a historical monument, was one of the few preserved examples of a Cartusian barn at the time of its inscription. This type of construction, linked to the order of the Chartreux, illustrates the vernacular and agricultural architecture of Alpine monastic communities. Its gradual abandonment, for lack of maintenance or restoration project, led to its advanced degradation, leaving only its foundation and foundations, now invaded by vegetation.

The Cartusian barns played a central role in the medieval and modern monastic economy, serving as storage places for the crops and resources necessary for the autarchic life of the monks. In mountainous regions such as the Chartreuse, these buildings reflected adaptation to climatic and topographical constraints, while at the same time showing the spiritual and economic influence of the Chartreuses on their territory. Their decline, often linked to the secularization or abandonment of traditional agricultural practices, marks a break in the transmission of this heritage.

The current location of the barn, near the place called Gerbetière in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartrouse, remains approximate, with a cartographic accuracy deemed mediocre (level 4/10). Owned by the municipality, the site does not appear to be subject to measures of valorisation or openness to the public, despite its historical and architectural interest. Its present state raises questions about the preservation of rural monastic remains, often less visible than major religious buildings but just as representative of local history.
