Origin and history
The pyramidal barn of Châtillon-sur-Loire is a historical monument located in the Loiret department, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. This type of construction, dated from the sixteenth century, is distinguished by its pyramidal structure, a rare architectural peculiarity, mainly observed in the northeast of the Cher and at the borders of the Loiret. A dozen similar barns were identified around Beaulieu-sur-Loire, highlighting their localized and distinctive character.
These barns are characterized by their wood panel structure, their back porch, and their imposing roof. Their interior is organized into parallel vessels, allowing various agricultural functions to be grouped under one roof. The frame is based on posts assembled in portals, a technique that reflects the local know-how of the time. The barn of Châtillon-sur-Loire, specifically, was moved and raised to the place called the Fontaine Bénat.
Classified as a Historic Monument, this barn was registered by decree on 6 July 2012. This status protects the entire structure, including its unique architectural elements. Although the sources do not mention specific characters or events related to its construction, its importance lies in its testimony of the agricultural and architectural practices of the Renaissance in this region.
The location of the barn, at approximately 9000 F La Fontaine Benat, is considered satisfactory (note of 7/10 according to available data). This monument thus illustrates the adaptation of rural buildings to functional needs and local resources, while offering a preserved example of 16th century vernacular heritage.
