Cheminée sarrazine with its mitre : inscription by order of 30 April 1925

Origin and history

The farm of Cossiat is an agricultural building located in the commune of Saint-Didier-d'Aussiat, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument is particularly remarkable for its traditional architecture, including its sarrazine fireplace, an emblematic element of the Bressane farms. The inscription of this chimney, with its characteristic mitre, as historical monuments in 1925, bears witness to its heritage significance and its local historic value.

In the Bresse region, farms like Cossiat played a central role in the economic and social life of rural communities. These farms, often organized around an inner courtyard, were essential places of production, combining livestock, culture and sometimes crafts. The sarrazine fireplace, with its imposing structure, served not only for heating and cooking, but also symbolized the family home and the prosperity of the farm.

These architectural elements reflect the adaptation of local populations to their environment and daily needs.
