Origin and history
The Marais Manor House, also known as the Marais Farm, is a manor house located in the former town of Hyenville, now integrated in Quettreville-sur-Sienne, in the Manche department. This monument, whose origins date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, has been partly listed as historical monuments since 1975. It is distinguished by its typical architecture of the period, including a residential building, a barn, an old chapel and a well, all protected.
The mansion is associated with the story of the privateer Robert Surcouf, who owned it. This emblematic character of the region, known for its maritime exploits, has marked local history. The site, located 1.9 km from Hyenville and 2.5 km from Quettreville-sur-Sienne, bears witness to the importance of the gentilhommières in the social and economic organization of Normandy at that time.
The facades and roofs of the main building, the barn and the old chapel, as well as the well, were inscribed by ministerial decree on 7 April 1975. This protection highlights the heritage interest of the site, both for its architecture and its link to regional history. Available data are mainly from official sources such as the Merimée and Monumentum databases.
