Cave (Doc. D 221): entry by order of 25 August 1995
Origin and history
The cave of Combe-d'Oulen is a natural site located in the commune of Labastide-de-Virac, in the department of Ardèche, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument, dating back to Prehistory, illustrates the importance of caves as shelters or places of life for ancient populations in this geological area marked by karst formations. Its designation as historic monuments in 1995 underscores its heritage and archaeological value, although the precise details of its occupation or discoveries remain little documented in available sources.
During the Prehistory, caves like that of the Combe d'Oulen played a central role in the lives of local communities. They were used as weather shelters, storage sites or sites for ritual or artisanal activities. In Ardèche, a region rich in natural cavities, these spaces were integrated into a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle, based on hunting, gathering and, later, the beginnings of agriculture.
The inscription of the cave as a historical monument now protects and studies these remains, offering an overview of lifestyles and human adaptations in a sometimes hostile environment.
