Grotto (Case E 778): registration by order of 25 August 1995
Origin and history
La grotto de Mézelet is a natural cavity located in the commune of Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, in the department of Ardèche, in the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. This site, dated from the Prehistory, illustrates the importance of caves as shelters or places of life for ancient populations in this geological zone marked by the gorges of the Ardèche. Its designation as historic monuments in 1995 underscores its heritage and archaeological value, although the precise details of its occupation or discoveries remain little documented in available sources.
The Vallon-Pont-d'Arc region, rich in prehistoric sites, was an area suitable for hunting, gathering and sheltering under rock for paleolithic or neolithic communities. Caves such as Mézelet could serve as temporary refuge, storage or ritual site, reflecting the nomadic or semi-sedentary lifestyles of the time. Their preservation makes it possible today to study the interactions between prehistoric man and his environment, in a geographical context marked by karst formations and streams.
The registration of the Mezelet Cave as a historical monument, by order of 25 August 1995, aims to protect this underground heritage from degradation and to enable its scientific study. The protected elements identified under cadastral reference E 778 include the entire cavity, but the sources do not specify the specific human artifacts or traces found there. This protection is part of a broader approach to valuing the prehistoric sites of the Ardèche, a department known for its exceptional archaeological heritage.
