Origin and history
The Prehistoric Cave of Combe Saunière, classified as a Historic Monument, is one of the few paleolithic habitats identified in France. This archaeological site is distinguished by its closed character and its almost continuous occupation during the major phases of the regional Paleolithic. Its importance lies in its ability to provide material testimony to human ways of life and occupations during this distant period.
The site has been protected since 1996 by an inscription covering plots AK 98, 100 and 102. Although its exact location is approximate (accuracy estimated at 5/10), it remains a reference point for the study of Paleolithic in New Aquitaine. Available data from sources such as Monumentum highlight its role in understanding prehistoric habitats in the region.
Located in Sarliac-sur-l-Isle, Dordogne, the cave is set in a landscape marked by a high density of prehistoric sites. His study helps inform the dynamics of human occupation and the environmental adaptations of paleolithic groups. No information is available on its current accessibility or possible tourist vocations.
