Prehistoric cave (Box B 707): inscription by decree of 31 January 2007

Origin and history

The prehistoric cave of La Cavaille is a major archaeological site located in the commune of Couze-et-Saint-Front, Dordogne (New Aquitaine). This monument, dated from Paleolithic, belongs to the perigordian culture, a period marked by the emergence of parietal art. The cave is distinguished by the presence of about ten engraved or painted figures, characteristic of artistic expressions of this distant era.

Classified as a Historical Monument, the cave was officially protected by a registration order dated 31 January 2007. The purpose of this administrative act is to preserve the archaeological and artistic elements of the site, including parietal representations that provide valuable testimony to the cultural and symbolic practices of prehistoric societies. The precise location of the cave, although documented in heritage databases such as Merimée, remains approximate, with a cartographic accuracy deemed mediocre (level 5 of 10).

The site is part of a regional context rich in adorned caves, typical of the Périgord. These underground spaces probably served as gathering places, rituals or the transmission of knowledge for Paleolithic communities. Their study provides a better understanding of human ways of life, beliefs and artistic techniques during this period, while stressing the importance of the Dordogne as a home of prehistoric art in Europe.
