Origin and history
The Grèze Prehistoric Cave, located in Marquay, Dordogne, is a major archaeological site of the Paleolithic period. It is distinguished by its betting works, some of which were identified and analyzed very early in the early twentieth century. This site reflects the ancient human occupation in the region and the artistic importance of this time.
The cave was discovered and studied early enough for Abbé Breuil to use the famous "twisted profile" of the bison as a reference in his classification work as early as 1914. This detail illustrates the scientific importance of the site, recognized as a historical monument. The cave was officially protected by a registration order in 2009, confirming its heritage value.
Located in the Dordogne department, in New Aquitaine, the Grèze cave is a typical example of the caves decorated with Paleolithic. These sites served not only as a shelter, but also as media for artistic and symbolic expressions, reflecting the lives and beliefs of the prehistoric populations of the region.
