Florent Nanquette - Architect Designer of the Modernist School Group.

Origin and history

The Pantin school group, conceived as an open-air and kindergarten primary school, was built between 1932 and 1933 by architect Florent Nanquette. Located in the former park of the Lordship, this building embodies the educational ideal of the 1930s, combining technical progress and hygienist values. Its architecture reflects a synthesis between modernity and regionalism, reinterpreting traditional forms through a contemporary prism.

A symbol of the ideal school of the inter-war period, this project is part of a broader movement to improve the living and learning conditions of children. The hygienist principles, then in vogue, are applied to it through an airy and luminous design, while integration in a park underlines the importance attached to nature in education. The whole, including the floors of the garden, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 18 November 1997, recognizing its heritage value.

The location of the school group at 30 rue Méhul in Pantin (Seine-Saint-Denis) is specified with good accuracy (level 8/10). Owned by the municipality, this monument also illustrates the commitment of local authorities to promoting innovative public architecture, combining educational functionality and aesthetic ambition. Available sources, such as Monumentum, confirm its outstanding example of 20th-century school architecture in Île-de-France.
