Origin and history

The guard corps of Saint-Pair is a military building built in the 18th century in the commune of Granville, in the department of the English Channel. Located at the tip of Roc, this building was part of a coastal surveillance network organized in captainries of a thousand men, established in 1705 along the Normandy coast. These watch posts, seventy for thirteen captains in the English Channel, were designed to protect the coast from external threats.

The captains, administrative and military structures, were abolished in 1778, marking the end of this defensive organization. The guard corps of Saint-Pair, a witness of that time, was registered as historical monuments by order of 27 February 1987. Today, there remains an architectural example of the 18th century coastal defence systems in Normandy, and belongs to the commune of Granville.

The monument is located precisely at the following address: 9003 Quai du Pan Coupe, in Granville. Its protection specifically concerns the guard body itself, identified under the cadastral reference AT 252. Although its initial vocation is military, its current state and accessibility (visit, rental) are not detailed in available sources.
