Origin and history
The Guiana Cultural Museum was founded in 1995 in Cayenne, before becoming a regional public institution in 1998. Its main tasks include the collection, conservation and study of material objects related to Guyana's traditional cultures, ethnic groups and societies. It also seeks to preserve the knowledge at risk and to restore it to the public through exhibitions and publications. The museum houses a space dedicated to temporary exhibitions at 78 rue Madame Payé, as well as a specialized documentation centre on the culture of the plateau des Guianas.
On 54 of the same street, a Creole house dating back more than 100 years, having belonged to Hermenegilde Tell (beautiful father of Felix Eboué), was restored according to local tradition. It illustrates the urban lifestyles of the past, with an indoor garden of aromatic and medicinal plants. The museum also preserves ethnographic, archaeological and documentary collections representing Amerindians, Bushinenge, Creoles, Hmongs, Brazilians and Haitians.
Labeled "Museum of France", the institution plays a key role in disseminating knowledge about Guyana's cultural diversity. Its collections include objects, sound archives, iconographies and historical backgrounds, reflecting the complex history of the region, from early settlements to recent migrations. The accuracy of its location is considered fair (note 5/10), and its photos are licensed under Creative Commons.
