Origin and history

The Guillon du Companage Museum originated in the École de Trait des Compagnons carpentiers du Devoir de Liberté, founded in Romanèche-Thorins in 1870 by Pierre-François Guillon. This establishment, dedicated to the training of artisans, attracted students from all over France and abroad, specialized in disciplines such as structure, staircase, carpentry and stone cutting. The museum's collections come directly from this school, reflecting its educational and artisanal heritage.

The museum retains an exceptional heritage, including masterpieces made by students as well as memories related to the history of companionship. An important iconographic collection, gathered by Pierre-François Guillon, allows us to evoke the evolution and traditions of this artisanal movement. These elements demonstrate the school's reputation and its role in the transmission of know-how across generations.

Although the museum is associated with the commune of Chaintré in some sources, its official address and collections are located in Romanèche-Thorins, in the department of Saône-et-Loire. This place, labeled "Musée de France", perpetuates the memory of the companions and their contribution to the craft industry, while offering a unique overview of their history through archival objects and documents.
