Well covered, on the square: inscription by order of 3 March 1926

Origin and history

The covered well of Poussay is a historical monument located in the commune of Poussay, in the Vosges department, in the Grand Est region. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, it embodies a utilitarian architecture typical of this period, designed to preserve water quality while facilitating its access to the inhabitants. Its registration in the inventory of Historic Monuments by decree of 3 March 1926 underlines its heritage importance and its role in local daily life.

In modern times, covered wells were essential elements in villages, ensuring the supply of drinking water while limiting the risk of contamination. In the Vosges, as in other rural areas, these works also reflected a community organization around shared resources. The Poussay well, located on the central square, illustrates this social and practical function, while marking the town's urban landscape.

Today, this well remains the property of the town of Poussay, although information on its accessibility or current use is limited. Its location, specified as "a priori satisfactory" with an approximate address at 42 Rue du Cloître, allows to situate it in the historical fabric of the village. The available data, especially from the Merimée database and Monumentum, confirm its protected heritage status, without providing more details on its specific history or possible restorations.
