Parcel containing remains of the Neolithic habitat of Auriac (see EW 4): inscription by order of 22 August 1990

Origin and history

The Neolithic habitat of Auriac, located in Carcassonne, Occitanie, is one of the most significant hunting sites known to date. This deposit, dated Neolithic, extends over three hectares at the end of a plateau forming spur. Its space organization and vestiges bear an exceptional witness to the human settlements of that period.

The site is surrounded by a large ditch, 120 to 190 metres long, with a width of more than 4 metres and a depth of 2 metres. This defensive system, combined with an excavated enclosure, reveals levels of filling rich in hunting artifacts. The excavations revealed a habitat soil connected to about 30 dug structures, such as fireplaces, silos, pits and pole holes.

Archaeological remains discovered on site include a variety of tools, wildlife debris, and pottery typical of hunting culture. These elements illustrate the daily activities of occupants, such as agriculture, food storage and food preparation. The site offers valuable insight into the way of life and social organization of neolithic communities in southern France.

The habitat of Auriac was recognized for its heritage importance, with an inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 22 August 1990. This protection relates specifically to the parcel containing the remains (EW 4), highlighting the scientific and historical value of the site. Despite an approximate location (precision estimated at 5/10), his study continues to enrich knowledge of Neolithic in Occitanie.
