Origin and history

The Bort-les-Orgues Wheat Hall, built in 1821, was originally intended for seed storage and sale. This octagonal building, located opposite the town hall, reflects the utility architecture of the first half of the 19th century. Its ground floor, pierced by arches in the middle of the hanger, and its floor with aligned windows illustrate a rational design, adapted to post-revolutionary commercial needs.

Originally, the hall housed a fountain under its staircase and was equipped with a metal awning serving as a music kiosk, destroyed in 1955. Ranked a historic monument in 1965, it symbolizes the evolution of public spaces: first place of economic exchange, it is today a cultural space welcoming exhibitions. Its octagonal dome roof, surmounted by an ear, and its stone structure testify to the local craftsmanship.

The hall is part of a historical context marked by the reorganization of markets after the French Revolution. In Corrèze, as elsewhere, these buildings facilitated agricultural transactions, essential to a still largely rural economy. Their central location, often near municipal institutions, strengthened their social and commercial role. The transformation of the hall into an exhibition site reflects a contemporary adaptation of this heritage.

Owned by the commune, the hall is located in Place du 19-Octobre, on an octagonal paving in response to the elevation of the land. Each facade, rhythmized by arcades and superimposed windows, creates architectural harmony. Its inscription in historical monuments in 1965 preserved this testimony of Bort-les-Orgues' economic and urban history.
